How to Digitize an African Insurer (Insurtech)

How to Digitize an African Insurer (Insurtech)

June 17, 2026

Digital transformation is no longer optional for insurers in francophone Africa. It now determines regulatory compliance, profitability, and the ability to win an increasingly mobile customer base. But a successful insurtech project demands far more than a website. Here is a concrete roadmap, drawn from platforms actually delivered on the Ivorian and regional markets.

1. Map the processes before writing code

Before any development, model the full policy lifecycle: rating, underwriting, issuance, collection, claims handling, and renewal. This mapping exposes the breakpoints, manual entries, re-keying, and paper round-trips that hurt customer experience and turnaround times. Digitization means eliminating those breakpoints, not reproducing them on screen.

2. Online quoting and self-service underwriting

The rating engine is the heart of an insurtech platform. For motor insurance, self-quoting lets the customer enter their vehicle, choose a coverage, and get an instant price based on current tariffs. Key considerations:

  • Centralize pricing rules in a configurable engine rather than hard-coding them, so tariff changes can be absorbed without redeployment.
  • Distinguish fixed-price products from products quoted live via the insurer’s API.
  • Deliver an identical experience to the end customer and to brokers through a dedicated app.

3. E-attestation and regulatory integration (ASACI)

In Côte d’Ivoire, the motor insurance certificate is dematerialized and centralized. Integration with the ASACI platform allows you to issue compliant, traceable, tamper-proof e-attestations directly from the underwriting journey. This is a non-negotiable prerequisite: a platform that cannot communicate with the regulatory body cannot issue valid policies. The architecture must therefore include a robust integration layer with error handling and queuing to absorb downtime of the third-party service.

4. Digital payments

Collection gates policy issuance. Across the continent, payment flows through mobile money, cards, and bank transfers. Integrating a regional payment aggregator (such as HUB2) covers multiple channels through a single technical connection. The key requirements: automatic reconciliation, handling of pending payments, status notifications, and idempotency to prevent double charges.

5. Claims digitization

Claims reporting and tracking are the moment of truth in the customer relationship. A mature platform enables online claims submission with attachments (photos, accident reports), real-time case tracking, and communication with the adjuster. The goal is to shorten settlement times, the single biggest driver of satisfaction and retention.

6. Architecture, security, and compliance

An insurance platform handles sensitive personal and financial data. The fundamentals:

  • A microservices or modular architecture, so quoting, attestation, and payment can evolve independently.
  • Integration with the existing accounting and management system (such as Microsoft Dynamics / Navision) to guarantee a single source of financial truth.
  • Data encryption, fine-grained access control, and operation logging.
  • An approach aligned with information-security best practices such as ISO 27001.

7. Change management

Insurtech projects rarely fail for technical reasons; they fail on the human side. Training sales and operations teams, supporting brokers, and rolling out progressively (by product or by branch) are decisive for adoption.
